The sleek Bellanca Cruisemaster owed some of her speed to her retractable landing
gear. On the early versions, they were manually raised with a hand crank, taking 37
turns usually to 'lock' them up or down.
Bellanca Aircraft Company later came out with a small servo that could do the job
easier, making it better for ladies to fly the Bellanca's.
An enginious little addition to a Bellanca was a little flag 'tab' that was mounted just
above the landing gear 'location' on the wings. They rasied up when your gear was
down, and when your gear was rasied, they would lower and conceal down in the
wing. This was to show you if your gear was down or not. No tab meant no gear.
